Foundation and United Way Worldwide Announce Nearly $1.5 Million in Grants for Grassroots Financial Education

The FINRA Foundation awarded nearly $1.5 million in grants to 12 recipients to extend the reach of community-based financial education programs across the country. This new program, Financial Education in Your Community, is administered jointly with United Way Worldwide. The funded projects will identify best practices for providing working individuals and families with the information they need to take action toward increasing their financial stability. On March 14-15, grantees met in the Washington, DC area—the site of the United Way Staff Summit—for a workshop conducted by Inger Giuffrida, a nationally-recognized financial educator and asset building consultant.

During the Opening General Session of the Summit, FINRA Foundation President, John Gannon, announced the continuation of the Financial Education in Your Community program for a second year.

Foundation Awards $1 Million in Grants to Fund Investor Advocacy Clinics

Four law schools received funding to launch investor advocacy clinics across the country to provide legal help to underserved investors involved in securities disputes. The Foundation awarded $250,000 each to Florida International University College of Law in Florida; Howard University School of Law in Washington, D.C.; Pepperdine University School of Law in California; and Suffolk University Law School in Massachusetts.

With these four grants, the Foundation has significantly expanded the geographic reach of securities advocacy clinics available to investors by doubling the number of states where these clinics will operate. In 2004, the Foundation funded the first securities arbitration clinic in the Midwest at Northwestern University School of Law. In 2006, the Foundation funded a grant to the Pace Law School Investor Rights Clinic to develop and distribute an educational guide to help small, individual investors understand their legal rights and responsibilities to avoid disputes, or seek resolution through arbitration or mediation. Both of these resources will be used as part of this grant program
