FINRA Foundation and USA Track & Field Foundation Help Athletes Sidestep Investment Fraud

The Foundation and the USA Track & Field Foundation have announced that they are working together to help track and field athletes spot and avoid investment fraud and make informed financial decisions.

To launch this joint initiative, the Foundation presented its Outsmarting Investment Fraud (OIF) curriculum at the 2011 USA Track & Field Annual Meeting earlier this month. Track and field professionals learned how to check the background of financial professionals and spot an investment that is too good to be true. The OIF curriculum reveals the tricks of the con artist's trade by highlighting the psychological persuasion tactics con artists use to get their victims to make emotional rather than logical investment decisions.

For track and field athletes, an understanding of these psychological tactics and how they can be used against investors can help them avoid becoming a con artist's next victim. The OIF educational curriculum has been tested and shown to reduce susceptibility to investment fraud by over 50 percent among participants.

FINRA Foundation Supports First Lady's "Joining Forces" Initiative with Expanded Financial Education Offerings for Military Families

In support of First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden's "Joining Forces" initiative, the Foundation has expanded its Military Financial Education Project. Launched in 2006, the project provides servicemembers and their families with free, unbiased tools and information to help them manage their money with confidence.

To support "Joining Forces," the Foundation will offer free FICO® Scores to 50,000 servicemembers and spouses—doubling the number of individuals receiving this vital credit tool. The Foundation will also develop a suite of educational videos to help members of the National Guard manage their finances and avoid investment fraud and continue efforts to educate and train military spouses as financial counselors.

The Military Financial Education Project includes educational forums on military installations, a comprehensive online resource, and more. It was designed to meet the unique financial education needs of servicemembers and their families who are often faced with frequent moves and extended deployments.
